Back then, you couldn’t understand why you had to wait. The gooseberries were already on the bush, green and big enough to pick. Grandma said it wasn’t time yet. You thought quite the opposite. So you stole the fruit before it was ready. Sometimes the berries were so sour your lips puckered inwards; other times, a little sweeter, which only convinced you that you’d been right all along. You wouldn’t let yourself see just how wrong you were.

Years later, you return to the same spot. The bush is still there, but this time no one is watching to make sure you reach for a berry at the right moment. No one says “wait”. The branches bow beneath the weight of fruit that no one picked too soon. The berries are bigger, softer and swollen with juice. You take one, and its skin splits beneath your fingers. The tartness hasn’t disappeared completely, but it has made room for sweetness. The flesh is plumper, juicier, softened by the sun. Just as someone who knew a little more about it than you did had promised.

And that’s when you understand it was never just about gooseberries. Sometimes maturity arrives without a clear turning point. Not when you reach a certain age or do something very grown-up for the first time, but when you return to a familiar place and suddenly see it differently. Foxy Nixie is a fragrance built around a single note: ripe gooseberry. If Bittsy Pixie is a gooseberry picked a little too soon, Foxy Nixie returns to the same bush a few weeks later, perhaps even a day past the perfect moment. This time, no one was keeping an eye on when the fruit needed picking. It has had time to ripen fully, and then a little more. It’s sweet, soft and heavy with flesh, with a delicate wine-like note that develops when summer keeps it on the branch a little too long. This is the moment we wanted to recreate: thin skin stretched taut over ripe flesh, sweetness balanced by a little tartness and a subtle trace of fermentation that gives the scent depth. We’ve used a 30% fragrance concentration to let this single note linger for as long as possible. It’s the same gooseberry you used to pick too soon. Only now it tastes different - sweeter, fuller and a little sadder, because the person who used to tell you when it was ready is no longer there.
